Kobelt Marine Steering – Hydraulic

Kobelt logo

Kobelt Hydraulic Steering components are manufactured in Canada in corrosion-resistant bronze, brass, and stainless steel, instead of aluminum and plastic. They are designed for commercial as well as pleasure use. There are hydraulic steering components for trailer boats to ocean-going ships. When it comes to quality, durability and value, Kobelt simply, blows away the competition. The following components are normal stocking items unless otherwise stated.

Kobelt Marine Helm Pumps

All Kobelt helm pumps are manufactured in bronze and stainless steel, except for the bearings and hardened pistons and pintol. Variable displacement pumps are adjusted by turning a screw on the front face of the pump.

Most of the models are available in powder coated, oven baked, black epoxy finish, with a few models available in natural bronze finish. Only short, tapered shafts are kept in stock (except for model 7005-AL). Straight shaft helm pumps may be special ordered with 2 to 3 weeks for delivery.

The Kobelt helm pumps are the only helm pumps on the market with a bronze body. Most of the competition use aluminum for the body which does not hold up to the harsh marine environment well.

Kobelt Marine Steering Cylinders

All of Kobelt cylinders shown are manufactured with brass cylinder tubes, bronze end caps and mounting hardware, and chrome plated stainless steel cylinder rods. The seals used are urethane U-Cup seals in the end caps, BUNA U-Cup seals on the piston and BUNA O-Rings to seal the end caps to the cylinder tube. For heavy duty applications some of the cylinders may be ordered with urethane U-Cup seals for the pistons. These are improved urethane U-Cup seals that are teflon impregnated to provide smooth operation. Not all the sizes are available of these seals by the manufacturer, so not all cylinders may be ordered this way. Usually the 1 1/2″ and 2″ I.D. cylinders may be ordered with these piston seals.

Steering Torque Calculations

Kobelt-Steering-WorksheetIf you have a rudder boat or vessel, a torque calculation should be done to determine the proper hydraulic cylinder. Kobelt has provided a steering worksheet in .pdf format for you to fill in. Once the information is submitted, they or we can do your torque calculation. Kobelt as well as Marine Specialties do not have charts telling you if your boat is this length then this is the steering system you should use. Torque values are calculated as each boat or vessel has different rudder sizes and speeds. Please use this steering worksheet and we will try our best to get it right the first time.
